there have been some efforts lately to improve the tildeverse federation of tildes.

i'd like to have a discussion here of how we should move forward and keep our tilde.team identity
at the same time.

what are your thoughts?

I think it is important to start by describing the identity of the ~team individually and the ~verse more broadly. The latter will be a challenge because it would probably have to be the result of discussions with representatives from the federated communities. So, starting with ~team, what are the core principles of ~team identity?

Teamwork! Huzzah!

But seriously, it's hard to preemptively define the culture unless you used it
as a recruitment method. It will be interesting to see what sort of focus
develops. Will this be an artsy place, something focused on FLOSS, maybe an
anti-capitalist haven. Who knows!

For my own part, my contributions here will be focused on the "small" nature.
Perhaps that doesn't distinguish it from other tildes as much, but it helps
define things for me vs the information super highway at large.

Ben, I love your efforts toward the greater tilde universe and I think you share
a similar focus toward keeping things small and relevant while also bridging
some gaps. Personally, I'd love to see a FIDONET style "TildeNET" message board
system grow out of bbj. I think that would be fascinating. Just like in the BBS
days, having the local boards vs the federated boards would be very helpful
in keeping a sense of local identity and avoiding getting lost in the churn.

Keep up the good work.

One core theme is clearly: Teaching and learning GNU/Linux and FLOSS through practice.

And I also like your focus on small and practical. It's easy to pull that right out of the Unix philosophy. In a teaching/learning environment, this could also be bent to say: Use tools that you understand, and spend time to understand the tools you use.

I don't think an anti-capitalist sentiment currently has strong representation in ~team, but an anti-extreme-capitalism sentiment certainly does. So I see another them as: A focus on using, teaching and even building FLOSS tools that serve as alternatives to exploitative commercial software and services.

this sounds spot-on to me!

>5 dozens @ 2018/10/11 00:39

I agree with the comments above

with the added observation that as a newcomer and primarily a townie

my feelings are that team is kind of a bridge and a gateway from town to the
verse

town is so blocked off and locked in and kind of inward facing. no open ports,
etc. and team builds on all the good things about town and adds more outward
facing stuff. it interfaces more with the rest of the world.

with the next logical step being to turn one's attention starwards, toward the
sky and the tildeverse at large.

i think that's a fair assessment.

team is a shell community like town, but without the lock-in. i'm of the mind that the sense of community isn't lost by having a few more services available.

>7 dozens @ 2018/10/11 17:40

>>6

I agree and didn't mean to imply otherwise. I think it's a great community :)

>8 justin @ 2018/10/12 16:57

>>6[ben]

Just out of curiosity, what do you mean by lock-in?

>9 ben @ 2018/10/12 17:00

>>8

if you're not familiar with tilde.town, they're another similar community, but with a larger focus on community instead of teaching and learning.

they have a node in the tilde.chat ircnet, but also an internal ircd that is only accessible from localhost so you need to be logged in.

it's just a culture difference where they want things to stay isolated and internal.

@justin this, what ~ben is saying here, is what I mean when I say "lock-in".
they have bbj and mail and irc and a blogging platform, but none of it is
accessible outside of the server. As opposed to tilde.team, which allows some
public access to it's content. You can both access your mail from a web client
and even just mail somebody from a non-tilde.team address for example.

One of the great aspects of the tildeverse is that anyone can set up their
own server with its own distinct theme and culture. Users are free to go
wherever they like, or to all places at once. If this tilde ecosystem
(tildecosystem?) keeps growing as it is now, that should push a lot of new
ideas and inspire a lot of innovation in user environments.

Edit: I should have pointed out, this is not a critical respons to dozens'
comment. I'm just trying to keep the discussion alive.

Must admit I'm struggling... when I load irc/weechat on town, I seem to get a federated server rather than the local one.

Not sure where I'm going wrong.

>13 aewens @ 2019/02/11 16:44

>>12

You probably have irc.tilde.chat (or similar) as the IRC server you are
connecting to, rather than the town specific one. You can get a list of the
tilde.chat servers from here:
https://tilde.chat/wiki/?page=servers

Do note, though, that if you select a specific server you will not get the
benefits of federation if ~town's (or whichever server you select) IRC server
runs into issues.

Huzzah! This bbj is now up and running on cosmic.voyage!

Very nice! Is the bbj linked between the two systems only, or with
other ~ servers?

i think we're also up and running on tilde.center?
fosslinux is also planning on setting it up on aussies.space

you can connect with any bbj client by specifying the host:

  bbj --host bbj.tildeverse.org

yep, i've added it on aussies.space, using it rn!

just run `bbj`, i set up a smallscript for it.>>16[ben]
